Abstract
Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate chronological changes of the clinicopathologic findings in primary gastric carcinoma who had undergone gastric operation in Chungbuk province.

Materials and Methods: Six hundred forty three patients who had gastrectomy in our hospital between January 1995 and December 2004 were included in this study and divided into early (322 patients between 1995 and 1999) and late (321 patients between 2000 and 2004) group. The clinicopathologic findings, including age, gender, location of tumor, type of operation, histological findings, stage, and ratio of early gastric cancer (EGC), were compared between the two groups.

Results: The overall male-to-female ratio was 1.9:1 with a mean age of 59.6 years. Location of tumor was highest in lower third of stomach (51.8%). Over all incidence of EGC was 43.7%, 36.6% in early group and increased to 50.8% in late group. Order of age distribution was 60¡¯s (41.0%), 50¡¯s(22.0%), 70¡¯s (14.9%) and 60¡¯s (38.0%), 70¡¯s (22.1%), 50¡¯s (18.7%) in the early and late groups, respectively. Compare to early group, the location(distal one third of tumor), well differentiated adenocarcinoma, low stage, partial gastrectomy was increased in late group (P<0.05).

Conclusion: Chronological change of gastric cancer were closely related to the increased number of EGC, low stage and old age patients.
